Sketch to Tech Pack: How to Turn a Drawing into a Factory-Ready File

May 2026

Most designs start as a sketch. The problem is that a sketch is not something a factory can make. Between the drawing and the finished garment sits the tech pack, the technical file with every measurement, material, and construction note. This guide shows how to get from a sketch to a tech pack without doing all of it by hand.

Why a sketch alone is not enough

A sketch communicates the idea. A manufacturer needs the spec. They cannot guess your sleeve length, your seam type, or your fabric weight. Hand them a drawing with no detail and you get a sample that looks nothing like what you pictured. The tech pack closes that gap. For the full breakdown, see what a tech pack is.

The traditional way

Done manually, the process looks like this:

1. Redraw the sketch as a clean technical flat, front and back.

2. Add callouts for every construction detail.

3. Build a measurement chart and grade it across sizes.

4. List every material and trim in a bill of materials.

5. Lay it all out into a document.

It works, but it is slow and it takes real technical skill. One wrong number and the sample comes back wrong.

The AI way

AI collapses those steps. You upload the sketch, and the tool drafts the flats, pulls the measurements, and assembles the spec. Your job shifts from building the document to reviewing it.

This is exactly what Aria does. Give it your sketch or a reference photo and it researches the construction, drafts editable flats, and builds a production-ready tech pack. It then connects you with manufacturers that make that type of garment. Work with Aria on the web, in the Adobe Illustrator plugin, or in the app.

Tips for a clean result

  • Draw both views. Front and back give the AI and the factory more to work with.
  • Note anything unusual. A specific pocket, a custom trim, a particular finish.
  • Check the measurements. Always review the graded spec against your fit sample. See how to take body measurements.
